Companionship Services for Seniors

Aging is an increasingly lonely business. The New York Times reported recently that 26 million Americans who are 50 or older now live alone. The percentage of American households with just one occupant is 30%, and even higher, at 36%, for people over 50 living on their own.

Aging is an increasingly lonely business. The New York Times reported recently that 26 million Americans who are 50 or older now live alone. The percentage of American households with just one occupant is 30%, and even higher, at 36%, for people over 50 living on their own. While we don’t tend to think of age 50 as “old” or “elderly,“ isolation and lack of social contact is detrimental to physical and mental health.

Caring Hearts Premier Home Care of Palm Desert, CA, provides companionship services for seniors. From simple conversation to assistance getting out and about in the community, senior companion care can brighten an elder’s life and help them maintain the social connections that are so vital to a fulfilling life.

Our companionship services for seniors can encompass activities like shopping and running errands, accompanying a senior to cultural events and performances, transportation to medical appointments, and general help around the house. Whether your loved one enjoys playing board or card games; trips to the local recreation center for a swim; or shopping for houseplants, décor, or new clothes, our companions can help. Our caregivers provide elderly care and companionship for seniors, based on their unique needs.

Aging doesn’t have to be lonely—it can be a very enriching and active time of life with the right help. Companions from Caring Hearts Premier Home Care are trained to treat clients with compassion and respect. They also get to know their clients as individuals with unique interests. Your senior family member may enjoy attending a sporting event or simply watching the event on television with them. Whether a senior wants to bake, paint, dance, or go to educational lectures, they can get support from Caring Hearts companions and share activities they enjoy with them. This relieves them of the worry of figuring out transportation or finding they don’t know anyone in their art or cooking class. They’ll always have someone to share the experience with when a companion from Caring Hearts is with them.

Common questions

What does a companion caregiver actually do?

Whatever makes the day better for your loved one: conversation, a game of cards or a puzzle, reading the paper aloud, a walk around the block, a drive to see the mountains, help with a video call to the grandchildren, or simply company during lunch. The goal is a day with something to look forward to.

My father says he does not need a "babysitter." How do families get past that?

It helps to introduce the caregiver as help around the house or a driver for errands rather than as "care," and to start with short visits built around something he enjoys. Our coordinators have had this conversation with many families and can help you plan the introduction. Most reluctance fades once the right person shows up.

Can the companion take my mother out of the house?

Yes. Outings to the park, a favorite cafe, a hair appointment, church, the library or a community event are a normal part of companion visits, with the caregiver alongside the whole time. The caregiver can drive her car at no extra charge, or their own insured car with mileage reimbursed on your invoice.

Is companionship appropriate for someone with early memory loss?

Yes, and it is often the best first step. Companion caregivers keep a familiar routine, offer gentle reminders, and notice changes a family might miss. If needs grow, the same caregiver can move into our dementia and Alzheimer's care service without starting over.
